The Star Ledger
One Star Ledger Plaza
Newark, NJ 07102

Dear Editor:

To the good people of Millburn -

“Troubled by an ever-growing deer population?” (“Town stirs debate on plan to thin deer herd,” The Star Ledger, January 25, 2006). Should the New Jersey Division of Fish & Game approve “net and bolt,” and bring the loveliness of the slaughterhouse to your yards, it will at least spare you hunters armed with rifles roaming your lawns in bright orange vests.

You people have spent far too much time within your castle walls. Why not save the cost all this foolish deer management will incur the township, and simply chase them from your kingdom with torches and pitchforks? You could chase these hateful herbivores to Newark where, perhaps, one snowy February morning, an impoverished fifth grader attending one of the more destitute public schools in America might see a whitetail stepping through the snow: this is a loveliness it seems you are finished with, and might be your only gift to the blighted city in the valley below you.

We now have almost one fifth of our population living in poverty (many of them children), we are slaughtering the people of Iraq, illegally, and every day our land, seas and skies cry out for better custodianship. All this, and you’re outraged that stray whitetails are nibbling at your hedges? Millburn fiddles, Rome burns. You people are villagers in every sense of the word.
